Pre-Flight Preparation
Book with seat selection in mind
The seat you choose affects your entire flight experience. Use SeatGuru to research the best seats on your specific aircraft before booking. For long flights, prioritize window seats for sleeping, aisle seats for easy movement, and avoid seats near lavatories or galley areas.
Set up price alerts immediately after deciding to travel
Don't book the first price you see. Set up alerts on Google Flights, Kayak, and Skyscanner for your route and desired dates. Monitor prices for at least a week before booking, unless you're traveling within two weeks.
Check passport validity well in advance
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Check your passport expiration date as soon as you start planning international travel. Passport renewal can take 4 to 6 weeks or longer during busy periods.
Research visa requirements thoroughly
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and destination. Use the IATA Travel Centre or your government's official travel advisory website to check requirements. Apply for visas well in advance — some require appointments at embassies that may be weeks away.
At the Airport
Use online check-in as soon as it opens
Online check-in typically opens 24 to 48 hours before departure. Checking in immediately gives you the best choice of available seats (if you haven't pre-selected) and ensures you have your boarding pass before arriving at the airport.
Know your terminal before you arrive
Large airports have multiple terminals, and traveling between them can take 30 minutes or more. Confirm your departure terminal when you check in and plan your transport to the airport accordingly.
Prepare your security tray before you reach the checkpoint
Have your laptop, liquids bag, and items from your pockets ready to go before you reach the security equipment. This speeds up the process for everyone and reduces the stress of fumbling at the checkpoint.
Download your airline's app before traveling
Airline apps provide real-time flight status updates, gate change notifications, and in many cases the ability to rebook yourself if your flight is disrupted. Having the app installed and logged in before you travel is essential.
In-Flight Tips
Drink water constantly throughout the flight
Cabin air is extremely dry — humidity levels are typically 10 to 20%. Dehydration is the primary cause of the fatigue and discomfort many people feel after long flights. Drink at least 250ml of water per hour of flight, and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
Move regularly on long flights
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a real risk on long flights. Get up and walk the aisle every 1 to 2 hours, do leg exercises in your seat (ankle circles, knee raises), and consider wearing compression socks on flights over 4 hours.
Adjust to destination time immediately
Set your watch to the destination time zone as soon as you board the aircraft. Try to sleep and eat according to the destination schedule rather than your home schedule. This is the most effective strategy for minimizing jet lag.
Bring your own entertainment and snacks
In-flight Wi-Fi is often unreliable or expensive. Download content to your device before the flight. Bringing your own snacks — particularly healthy options — ensures you have food you enjoy regardless of the airline's meal service.
Arrival Tips
Stay in the secure area if you have a connection
If you have a connecting flight, do not exit the secure area unless you need to clear customs and re-enter. Staying airside saves significant time and avoids the need to go through security again.
Report lost luggage before leaving the airport
If your bag doesn't arrive, report it at the airline's baggage service desk before leaving the airport. Obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with a reference number, which you'll need for tracking and any compensation claims.
Have your onward transport arranged in advance
Know how you're getting from the airport to your accommodation before you land. Research your options (airport train, taxi, rideshare, shuttle) and have the relevant apps installed or bookings made. Arriving at an unfamiliar airport without a plan adds unnecessary stress.
